Disabled Transport Options

Transport for disabled people has improved greatly over the last 20 years, however there are still some areas where it can seem complicated.

To use rail transport using a wheelchair it is necessary to call your rail company giving 2 or 3 days notice of intent to travel, this is to ensure that ramps will be available at the beginning and end of your journey. Not all rail companies will take mobility scooters so this also needs to be checked prior to your journey. Rail companies operate station to station accessible transport to take you onward if the station you are travelling to is not accessible. HAD is proud to partner with First Capital Connect to provide this service locally.

The tube system is difficult for wheelchair users, many stations are not accessible. However most buses in London are wheelchair accessible. In Hertfordshire approximately 1 in 5 buses are accessible to wheelchair users and many will not take mobility scooters at all. It is always advisable to check with the bus company before hand.

Not all taxis are accessible to wheelchair users although most ‘Hackney cab’ style taxis are.

HAD’s transport service is fully accessible and runs 24 hours a day 365 days a year.
