The London-based National Information Forum has recognised the scheme’s good work in its annual Getting the Message Across Awards event.
The ourteach service is run in conjunction with Age Concern Hertfordshire and operates on board Ivanhoe our fully accessible Mobile Equipment Service.
Benefits Advisor Karen Beazley (pictured recently in Hemel Hempstead) has helped more than 5,000 local people since going on the road last May.
The initiative, backed by the Department for Work and Pensions, has been a big success as Age Concern Hertfordshire’s Community Services Development Manager Bob Green explains:”The award is a fitting tribute to Karen and the Ivanhoe team. Government figures told us that a large proportion of older people did not claim all they were entitled to. By going out and meeting them face to face we have rectified this.”
Ivanhoe offers the ideal means of communication. The lorry has been travelling the county for several years and is a frequent visitor to supermarkets and other venues.
“This venture has been very well received by both members of the public and professionals alike,” HAD’s Chief Executive Annabelle Waterfield said. “The intention of the initiative has always been to provide a facility that is easily reachable and available to all sectors. The fact that it has won such a prestigious award and seen so many people proves what a great success it has been.”
The Getting the Message Across Awards recognises organisations providing innovative, effective, appropriate and exciting ways of presenting information to disadvantaged people.
Karen will receive the award at a special ceremony in London in October.
