Game, set and match Paul Mather!
Hatfield estate agent Paul Mather enjoyed a VIP visit to this year’s Wimbledon tennis championships.
Paul successfully bid for the trip last September at our inaugural golf day auction. Hosting the trip was Sybil Howgego.
“I was promised a cracking day out and I wasn’t disappointed,” Paul explained. “I gather Sybil has been hosting these days for a number of years and my wife Nancy and myself were treated like Royalty.”
Sybil, from Essendon, is a member of the Hertfordshire Lawn Tennis Association and this was the second time she had kindly donated the prize.
Here’s Paul’s account of his day:
“We arrived at Wimbledon with passes giving us access to almost all areas, and parked in the Members’ car park. We then proceeded to the Members’ restaurant where we met some of Sybil’s other guests.
“After being treated to Pimms, wine and beer we enjoyed a fantastic lunch over-looking Centre and the other courts. After a short delay for rain we then proceeded to our fantastic seats just above the Royal box to watch reigning men’s champion Roger Federer win quite easily.
“Then after some more refreshments back at the restaurant we walked back to watch Serena Williams and Amelie Mauresmo after bumping in to them on the way to our seats and wishing them good luck.
“Serena played a superb match against the marvellous Mauresmo and was too strong; winning in straight sets.
“The tennis watching proved to be hungry work and we were soon back in the Members’ area enjoying afternoon tea and cakes. We then went back to watch the match of the day between Mario Ancic and David Ferrer which lasted late on till the evening and was concluded the following day with a win for Ancic.
“We drove back to our home in Welwyn Village that evening thoroughly satisfied after a very special day. Definitely game, set and match to Sybil!”
