Welcome to HAD

Delivering innovative affordable, practical services to disabled people since 1958.

HAD has been providing practical services and support to disabled and older people for more than 50 years.

Our services (listed on the right) are becoming increasingly important and popular to a wider range of people, not only in Hertfordshire, but further afield too.

And with people living longer - a recent survey puts the average life expectancy in our area at 81 years - HAD must and will continue to grow.

That’s why we are planning to build a £3m Ability Centre, either at our present site or nearby. And we're also on the look-out for a key new member of staff - a Business Development Manager. To read more click here

As you can see elsewhere, there are plenty of ways you can help us. For instance when our General Administration Assistant Julie Richie's father Tony died , Julie and her mum Christine nominated HAD as a beneficiary.

We're pleased and proud to announce that Christine recently brought in a cheque for £360. Thank you Julie and Christine.

EDITOR'S COMMENT

It appears our Mobile Equipment Service - Ivanhoe - is no longer wanted in two locations in Stevenage.

The local council informed us a while ago that we could not sell our range of products in the town centre because we were creating 'unfair competition.' We now provide information only here.

Now Asda supermarket don’t want Ivanhoe to provide a service in their car park any more. They have given no reason for this decision. However Asda has just started selling disability equipment themselves.

I suppose we should be flattered that the big wigs at Asda and Stevenage Borough Council feel that a charity like HAD poses such a threat. But, ultimately, we feel sad for disabled and older people in Stevenage who are being deprived of competitively priced products and professional, friendly advice.

Ivanhoe will still visit the Adult Care Services-run Stevenage Resource Centre in Chells Way .

Meanwhile, the Mobile Equipment Service will continue to be welcome in 25 other towns and cities throughout Hertfordshire. To see the schedule click here
