U-turn On Mobility Benefit

2 December 2011

The government's plan to cut the 'mobility' component of Disability Living Allowance - worth £51-a-week - has been dropped.

The change would have affected up to 80,000 disabled people in care homes across the country who would have used mobility scooter and wheelchair accessible transport, such as HAD's, to get out and about with their family and friends. You can read more about HAD's transport by visiting our 24 Hour Accessible Transport page.

The cut had been branded as 'callous' by charities and disabled people alike. The money allows people in residential accommodation to visit family members, take part in activities and to be part of wider society in general and is a lifeline to many people.

Had it been removed, residents themselves would have been robbed of the chance that everyone else has of being involved in the wider world.

HAD welcomes this very rare u-turn and wishes everyone who would have been affected by this change a very Merry and Mobile Christmas!!
