Nan knows best! Why marathon man Jacob chose HAD

8 February 2019
Raising money for HAD runs in the family for Jacob Hoy. Jacob, 31, is taking part in this year's London Marathon in April and decided to run for HAD after having a quick chat with his Nan.

Nan is Pat Mabbott, who raised £6,000 for the Welwyn Garden City-based charity in 2016 when she was mayor of Welwyn Hatfield.

“I wanted to raise money for a local charity and I asked Pat if she could recommend one,” Jacob explained. “It only took a moment for her to nominate HAD because of how they helped look after my grandfather Terry after he had a stroke about ten years ago.”

Jacob, who lives in Ware and works as head of sales and partnerships at the New Skills Academy in Hertford, is up to speed with his marathon training regime. “I'm running about 34 miles a week and have already almost run the half-marathon distance of just over 13 miles,” he explained. Jacob has set himself a target of finishing in four hours for the full marathon on 28 April. He also plans to take part in the London Landmarks half-marathon at the end of March.

With luck sports-mad Jacob should reach his target. Jacob plays six-a-side soccer once a week at John Warner School in Hoddesdon, golf once or twice a week at Cannonsbrook Golf Club in Harlow and works out at the gym five days a week!
