Alison's wheel appeal

Alison Pearman and fire engine

Some girls love Lamborghinis, some are mad about Minis, but Alison Pearman likes something a bit bigger to drive.

Since she was little, Alison, newly appointed Secretary at Hertfordshire's leading disabled charity HAD has wanted to get behind the wheel of a fire engine.

Now it looks like her wish has come true.

Alison, is taking part in next month’s Ladies Driving Challenge charity event. All participants will be able to try their hand at manoeuvring a range of different vehicles around Bovingdon Airfield, near Hemel Hempstead on Mother’s Day - March 14.

And, as you can see, she has already got in a bit of practice at Welwyn Garden City Fire Station, where Crew Commander Steve Bishop and Firefighters Bob Stracey, John Bone and Paul Cosby put her through her paces.

“I’ve been a keen driver for 20 years but it really goes back to when I was a small girl,” Alison explained. “I used to spend my holidays with my Uncle Roy in Devon. He was a lorry driver and big HGV fan and I think the memory of those happy days has always stuck with me.”

Event organiser Laura Harden confirms there will be a fantastic fleet of desirable vehicles to drive. “So far we’ve got ambulances, fire engines, JCBs, various off-road vehicles and we’re hoping to have a new combine harvester too,” she said.

All participants in the event will be raising money for The Fire Fighters Charity and Grove House Hospice. Alison needs to raise at least £90 to take part. If you want to sponsor her call her at work on 01707 324581 or click on her Just Giving page on the left.
